It could also be as simple as the resin is not fully cured after just a few days in cool temps. Some varnishes and paints really hate to cure over fresh epoxy. Sam Devlin writes about in his book. He states that he give epoxy 30 days to cure before paint or varnish! I like to use Interlux Schooner 96 varnish and need to let epoxy cure (System 3) several weeks minimum before using varnish or standard oil paint will cure right. Your sticky situation may go away with some warmer temps and time.
