You are doing it the hard way. The top ring of the cockpit coaming is your template. Using the plans, mark the centerline of the boat on the inside edge of the top ring of the cockpit coaming. Mark the cenetrline of the boat on the deck. This will help line the coaming up with the boat. Leave the opening cut proud. Only cut back as much of the deck as you need to to get the clamps in place. After the coaming is attached and hardened you can cut the opening to the final size. Hope this is clear.
