On my second kayak, I used the spot weld technique with some epoxy and wood flour. Then removed all the wires before doing the rest of the fillet. I was pleasantly surprised that a 3/8 inch dab of goo every 4 inches or so was more than adequate to hold after curing. I pushed it into the seam and used the pointy end of a plastic spoon to smooth it out. After removing the wires I was able to make a much smaller and neater fillet and have had no strength problems.
