Andy,

You're on the right track in regards to glassing the crack. Also, I would use the strap to epoxy (thickened) the jagged ends together the best that you can. I would also drill a small hole (1/16") at the terminus of the crack. That way the crack has no where to go.

How do I know these things. Well, let's just say it was from personal experience.
