Skerry : rabbet or not

Hi builders, I like the Skerry and would like to build her from plans in a row only version. I have few tools and I am a little afraid of making that lapstitch groove or rabbet. I was though wondering of a easy technique to make that lapstitch groove (no power tool), or just joining the panels like a regular stitch and glue boat... Any comments
