What do you mean by "taking a beating"? Surface scratches, gouges, deep enough to show wood?
I also use my skerry around rocky shores, and it gets scratched pretty badly, as well as gouged, but nothing has gotten through the fiberglass. I use a marine fiberglass putty to fill any deep scratches and touch up the paint on a regular basis (a couple times a season), and most of the time there is no evidence of past gouges. That might seem a little excessive, but it's really pretty easy.
