Residue? You mean natural gunk from paddling?

Scrubbing and washing seems like a no-brainer to me. Why sand a dirty surface?

Why do you need additional coats of epoxy? Is it to continue filling/fairing? I assume the boats are already well sealed (otherwise, yikes!), and that the additional epoxy is not intended to simply rejuvenate the surface (not necessary imo).
