Matching colors with wood filler is hard, but you could try using sandings with epoxy. The reason being that the wood flour will darken as it absorbs epoxy, and so will the surrounding strip. Better test it first, though.
Did the monkeys leave a wide enough slot for you to put a sliver of cedar in there? That would be preferable. You'll need a long wedge of cedar, created by running a course-set plane along one corner of an unused strip. Tap it into the slot with a bit of glue to stop it falling out. then plane it flush when set.
