On my CH16's (from plans) I made sure the butt block joint was exactly at the maximum beam to ensure the smallest joint. This meant I had to use a scarf joint for the short bow piece. I was able to use the router jig for this. I'd say that if you make your rough cut out too tight, you'll run into problems trying to keep things lined up come gluing time. The generous rough cut is very forgiving.
