Strictly speaking, give the glop sufficient surface area, and it won't kick at all. The 'kick' happens when the reaction runs away. It heats up, speeds up, heats up more in a vicious cycle. Using John's big pot or Alan's cookie sheet, it will stay at room temperature and give you all the time in the world. Same thing with a small syringe.
If you're doing a big thin mix, though, options are limited. Only mix as much as you can splurge onto the glass within, say, 3-5 minutes. Once spead, it will go slow, so you have time to mix some more. If we all seem a little vague with actual timings, it's because we don't look at our watches when slathering goo!
