I've been a nurse for many years, and I've seen a whole bunch of dying. One of the things that drew me to boats was how life-affirming the act of making a boat was. In the abstract, and in the reality, there is nothing like it, except having kids (maybe...!)
Don't know where I'm going with this exactly, but I reckon a couple of things: First, I'll bet your pop-in-law would rather have been making a millcreek right about then too, and second, there is nothing wrong with conjuring pleasant thoughts in a tough situation, ever.
Peace, and take care of your woman.
