I'm thinking and looking at something like Zeus fasteners. They are used to install panels in aircraft cockpits. Completely recessed and you push down the screw and small spring 90 degress to secure. Similar to the Garcia bear canistors concept but with a spring around the screw. The toggles do look somewhat archaic -- but simple.
