As one who has had his share of back problems, I must say that paddling is good exercise. I have two titanium rods with six screws holding the lower back together. Even with the robotics inside, I have never had a problem and can paddle for hours and feel no ill effects. The key is to strengthen the back, as has already been advised, and take care of it. Else you'll be setting off metal detectors like me.
