I did the same when I was deciding to build a CLC kayak 7yrs ago, the standard Ch16 was deeper than my 5'9" frame needed so I cut the side panels down 1/2" before attacking the sheerclamps. The overall above waterline length is kind of irrelevant..the 16/16LT,17/17LT,18,18LT are all the same hulls with a bit less freeboard. Handling in the water is the same.
