no pilot holes necessary...the plywood won't split. both karl and kurt are pretty much right...while they won't split, you need to ensure you have a good system for bending the wood and that system really needs to allow you to keep your hands free in order to drive the nail cleanly.

half my boats i have built using nails, the other half with nailess construction....which is an approach you can consider if you are not excited about the nailed look.
