kayak paddle length

Hi! I guess this isn't on subject so I apologize for that. I'm about finished with a millcreek 13 (A few more coats of varnish and some bungies and stuff). Right now I'm going to start with an 8 foot aluminum paddle that I bought at a garage sale for a pirough that I built a few years ago. I would like to buy a decent paddle and also make one out of wood, but I really don't know what size to go for...I'm 5'8" and weigh in at about 180 (I'm sure the extra 20# is muscle from paddling the pirough. Can anybody give me some hints on paddle size? I'd hate to spend a lot of money on the wrong size.
