That link doesn't work for me.

But if they are using the standard equation for a displacement boat (something having to do with the square root of the waterline), a kayak will actually go faster than they predict.

This is because that equation assumes that the hull will be blocked by the wave of water that it's pushing away and will not be able to travel any faster than the wave's speed (which is related to the wavelength).

Planing boats get around this by riding on top of the wave and long narrow boats like kayaks slice through the wave. In either case, they can go substantially faster than the equation predicts.
