I agree with Steve regarding the shaving. Try a Japanese pull saw next time - it seems they were made for just this type of application.

If you're not happy with the deck to side joint, you could always consider rub rails and a little stained plastic wood prior to FG.

Know what? You'll bash the livin' crap out of that area over the next few years anyway.
