oh what the heck,,read somewhere that you need 1.5% of the sail area in the rudder immersed in the water. 40sq.ft. means .6 sq.ft. IN THE WATER. Which is about the total area of the feathercraft rudder. Looking at the picture of the sailrig underway it looks like about 1/3 of the total blade area is in the water. There must be a reason Steve Isaac devoted a page to the topic back when he made a CLCsailrig mark I for his Ch18.
