Skeg/17LT

In my short kayaking career I've caught some high winds (Half Moon Bay south of San Francisco) during which I did not have a skeg or rudder.

I haven't liked a rudder because the foot rests move.

So when I ordered my kits this week (17LT and 16LT) I ordered the retractable skeg kits too.

Are these boats, the 17LT and 16LT, boats that need a skeg less than others?

Also after reading about a cracked rear deck in a recent posting in this forum it occurred to me that a skeg installation would strengthen the deck. At least I believe so?
