It seems common to go with a bright finish. I am building a chesapeak 17 and was currious what I need to do if I go a little darker. Would I stain the panels first? OR is the a tinted varnish to use in the final stages? Forgive me I am a beginner here. Thank you.

RE: Finish
OK Thanks alot. I might just take your advice and stay with the bright finish to keep things as simple as they can be.

I would not recommend staining a first build. It complicates life. To get an even stain on a S&G it is best to stain the plywood seal coating with epoxy prior to cutting and drilling the panels.
