Newb varnish question

Pretty simple... Do you sand the last coat of varnish and if so with what sandpaper? 500 wet sanding still leaves some swirls unless I’m doing it wrong... I’m thinking 2000 for a finish?

RE: Newb varnish question

That's personal preference. Some folks sand (and polish) the last coat, others just take it as it is and go boating.

The thing to keep in mind is that once you get that car showroom finish, taking the boat out on the water generally has it looking as if you hadn't sanded and polished it within a few days. The elements, animals, bugs, docks, other boats , trees, bushes, parking lots, tie-downs, being carried, being put down, etc. take their toll.

If you still want to do it, yes, finer than 500. I've even heard of 4000 being used before the polishing compound.
