Mahogany is extremely rare for spars, because it has a lot of cross grain and can be brittle. We use it for things like rubrails, because it's lovely under varnish, and supported by the rail of the boat.

We're still using a lot of recycled Sitka spruce for spars on CLC boats. It's a little heavy and expensive, but VERY pretty. We use northern white spruce when we can and cypress sometimes, too.
