The strongest laminate in a stitch-and-glue boat is a layer of 'glass on either side of the plywood. (Engineers will note that for puncture resistance the inner layer should be the thicker one, but you have to think of abrasion on the outside, too, not just tensile strength.)

So you pay a weight penalty for all that 'glass and the perfect balance between strength and weight is always going to be a compromise. Keeps it interesting.
