You can carefully use a jigsaw to remove most of the waste then use a block plane or belt sander to fair the transition from deck to hull. After fairing, a 2-3" strip of 4 ounce cloth was added over the seam. Since I had a few spots that required filler, I chose to carry the hull paint over onto the deck. If you don't add the bulkheads prior to adding the deck, there is less reason to leave the overhang. The hull can be flexed a bit to meet up with the deck.
