Jamie:

I was thinking (for a change):

I used to have an old aluminum canoe with a "lake keel," i.e., a long T-shaped alumium extrusion, maybe 3/4" high, rivieted along the keel line and tapered at the ends. This made the canoe much more manageable in varying wind conditions than a flat bottomed canoe with no keel. Something to think about if you want better tracking and still want a beachable boat. Should be easy enough to find the extrusion on the web or at a local metal supplier.
