Re: stress crack

I have an Old Town plastic and it is the same way when you hit bottom. I guess if it can flex that way with no structural failure, then it is ok and no reinforcement is needed?

It reminds me...I had a buddy who was a stress analysis engineer for plastic parts, and he pointed out a funny thing about this subject. He said sometimes an engineer would bring him a plastic cover latch that failed in test or in use, was redesigned with greater material thickness, but still failed. Phil would point out to the designer that the cure for the original failure was to REDUCE the part thickness, not increase it! The engineer would make the latch thinner, it flexed easier, the max stress was less...and the part now worked as intended!
