How much sheer is needed?

So I was just catching up on some weekend comments and saw one LeeG made about the "extra thick" sheer not being necessary once the epoxy has cured. My question is this, then. How much sheer is necessary? I had a look at the inside of my boat once my decks had been installed and I noticed lots of small gaps (on the inside) between the deck and the sheer clamp. The deck feels solid when I pick the boat up, but I was thinking about filleting anyway. Will this just be extra weight? I have to fill a couple of gaps on the outside so I can get a smooth round-over, so I'd like to minimize my epoxy use.

Should I worry at all about this, as long as the deck is secure?
