Using thicker plywood on the bottom
I am planning to build my first canoe this fall. The directions for the Sassafras 14 say to use 4 mm plywood or 6 mm plywood for added strength. Has anyone tried using 6 mm for the lower strips (for added strength) and 4 mm on the upper boards (for reduced weight where added strength is not so important)?

I don't think so. The plans call for, I think, 4 sheets of plywood. I expect I could figure it out so that I could buy 3 and 1 or 2 and 2.

Answering a question with a question: Would it end up costing you more because you might have to buy and extra sheet(s) of plywood to get that differential?
