It's not part of the design and needs to be fixed, but it happens a lot, not just on Wood Ducks.
How you fix it depends on whether you've glued the deck on or not. If not, you can add another piece of wood to close the gap. If yes, fill the gap with very thick epoxy/woodflour putty, let it cure and add a smooth fillet over the filler. If you want it strong as possible, glass it, too.
