WD12 attaching the cockpit coating

Everything is going smoothly so far, knock on wood!!  According to the instructions, after applying the 3rd coat of epoxy to the deck, it goes straight to “Installing the coating”. Should I sand the deck before installing the coaming? Also, I noticed when dry fitting the coaming, the coaming overlaps the deck in a couple of places by an inch or less. Do I go ahead with the installation and cut flush when finished or do I force the edge flush when glueing up the coaming?

RE: WD12 attaching the cockpit coating

The deck is a lot easier to sand without the coaming in the way, and the coaming is a lot easier to sand without the deck in the way. In addition, building the coaming on the deck can leave drips and scratches that will be no fun to fix, especially if you've already sanded the deck.

What I did on my WD12 was to cover the deck with plastic, build up the coaming, remove the coaming and do all the shaping and sanding off the boat and glue it into place after the deck weave was filled and sanded. It came out really well.

This is one of two times that I recommend not following the instructions.
