clc skerry compared to clc od

Length    Weight      Beam   Max payload   Sail Area

Skerry       15' 0''"    95   lbs      54"       450 lbs            56 sq ft

Peapod      13'5"      160 lb        52"      650 lbs            95 sq ft

Given same conditions and crew:

- Which is likely to row faster?

- Which is likely to sail faster?

- Which is likely to be more forgiving to row?

- Which is likely to be more forgiving to sail?

I find the differences in weight and sail area intriguing.

Ooops, should be skeryy compared to peapod. Apologies.

RE: clc skerry compared to clc od

John will have to give definitive answers, but I know my skerry w/ the lug rig has more than enough sail area to get to hull speed in modest breezes.  It can get overpowered if I don't reef. John's designs are never undercanvassed.  It looks like the peapod has more waterline beam and more displacement per inch of draft that the skerry which is about the only way to get more payload on a smaller LOA and beam.  The peapod carries its beam down to the garboard where the skerry flares more above the waterline.  My guess is that in a long solo row, the skerry will be ahead but the differences will even out as the payloads go up.  When sailing, I'll bet the peapod has more initial stiffness.  That, and more wetted area means it can and must carry more sail that the skerry.
