Hi All,
I'm finishing up my first build and things have gone relatively smoothly thanks in large part to the information on this forum.
My question is around finishing the cockpit area where the rowing unit sits. Is it necessary to paint/varnish this area or will the boat be functional/protected with the interior left with only epoxy as the top layer?

Since the epoxy in the cockpit will be exposed to UV light from the sun, It is in your best interest to cover it with paint of varnish. The epoxy will yellow and crack and peel without protection from UV.
Paint something cool!

Agree with Joel. On all my kayaks, I have applied ~3 coats of varnish in the cockpits. These where quick coats without much regard for cosmetics because that area gets pretty scatched up from use.
