Skerry push/pull tiller rubbing on rail

I have noticed the past couple time coming back from sailing that there is rubbing marks along the starboard aft rail on my Skerry due to rubbing from the tiller.  Probably when my arm is getting tired, and I’m running the tiller on the rail.  Anyone come up with a way to protect the surface?  I guess I could wrap the tiller in some leather but I haven’t seen anyone do that before in their pictures so I’m wondering other than my arm being lazy what am I doing wrong.

Scott

Check out the link to a picture of my tiller that has leather stiched on it.  This works for me.

Or wrap some twine or thin line around the tiller where it meets the gunwale.

Scott, The link below shows the grip end of my Skerry tiller.  I used a French spiral hitching for a good grip.  I don't think it would work to protect your rail.  Leather in my opinion would be the best bet.

What about a strategically located turk's head knot?

Thanks for the advice. I’ll play around with the tiller some more since more of the issue is probably my form more than anything else.  I do like the leather idea if it persists as a problem

Scott, here's a pic showing where I screwed the little flip-up plastic bracket, that comes with the universal joint I used for the tiller to rudder connection, onto the gunwale, to keep the tiller in place when not in use, and to keep it from rubbing on the rail.

Hi Daniel:

The URL you posted yielded the dreded 404 error message.  Can you paste the photo here using the insert image button?

RE: Skerry push/pull tiller rubbing on rail

Sorry about that - let me give that method a shot here...

RE: Skerry push/pull tiller rubbing on rail

Well that obviously didn't work - I'll keep trying.

RE: Skerry push/pull tiller rubbing on rail

Couldn't manage it through the insert picture link - Perhaps try this link below - it's supposed to work acc'd to a google help site -

Ruud,

Picaso refers to GetGoogle, which is the link I just posted, and I found no way to get that link (or any jpg link from GetGoogle) into the insert photo feature here on the forum.  The TinyPic and Photobucket links are not responding.  Flicker has become a Yahoo product (and all that entails).  I tried using my yahoo account, for Flicker, and wasn't able to secure a link to the picture for purposes of using the photo insert feature of this forum.  So the best I could do was post a link to the GetGoogle page I use.  I suppose Dropbox might also work, don't know.  Thanks - Brad

   Boat Builders ForumBrad,

Indeed Tinypic is not responding. I found an tiny picssite based in the netherlands (http://nl.tinypic.com).That one seems towork, still.

It is time that CCL boats gives an update of the working method when placing photos
