Chesapeake 16/17 - Is nailing the deck really necessary?

I'm building a Chesapeake 16 and am about to install the deck.  My preference is to use temporary screws to fasten the deck for gluing, rather than installing ring nails as called up in the instructions.

My question is whether this will lead to any appreciable loss of strength?  My understanding is that the structural epoxy securing the deck is much stronger than the nails, therefore they could be safely omitted.

Thanks,

Duncan

Duncan,

I built my wife's CH16LT without deck nails 13 years ago and the deck still hasn't come off yet.

Go for it,

Laszlo

Ditto Laszlo's note.

No nails necessary.

I used glass-reinforced strapping tape to temporarily hold my deck in place while the epoxy set.

that said, important to ensure the glue has fully set prior to pulling your temporary hold off (screws or tape).

in addition to the epoxy, you will also glass the deck and wrap the cloth over the deck/hull seam.  this is plenty strong.
