chesapeake hatch straps

Is there a downside to glueing a CLC carbon eyestrap, where you would normally screw in a hatch strap, and using bungee cords to hold the hatch in place?  I would cut the bungee to provide pressure and attach a hook to either end. I have little experience but it seems it would provide enough tension to  hold the hatch in place.  I have carbon eyestraps for all of my deck bungee cords and think this might provide a more uniform look to the deck. Done properly I think I could get more pressure on the hatch, am I wrong? Thanks.

Some design considerations concerning your hatch modifications.

Will the hatch with your design stay in place when you punch through a wave?

Will the hatch stay in place during a capsize?

Will the hatch fittings be corrosion resistant?

Will the hatch be raccoon resistant at a wilderness camp site?

Thanks Grumpy, given my building experience that is very helpful.  I have had some experience keeping critters away from my stuff, I have won most of the battles but lost a few. I will take a hard look at my final design. After reading your post I did come up with a way to make an easy transition to conventional straps should my idea fail.
