Foot braces. If your type of paddling is just leisure and no need for speed, then foot braces arn't necessary. If you want to move right along and get somewhere, they are a great advantage. The simpliest I've seen is to tie a length of rope to each side of your seat and tie on a 2X2 about 24 inches long out where you can use it as a foot brace. Other methods are more permanent and you can see a variety of them in canoes at canoe dealers. Probably look on line too. As they say, "just google it"
