Racing in the Chesapeake Bay Area

Now my wonderful NE Dory is a "good old" NE Dory having been out for a good season on the water in both the Inner Harbor of Baltimore and small lakes in Central Florida (cartopped).

I've been looking around for small boat races in the Chesapeake Bay area (or even further afield) and have been having some frustrating time finding anything! I'm looking for tips or knowledge of races that anyone may know of.

I'm an ex-Lightning racer from way back, and getting 'back' into the sport. Was going to do the EC this year, but work and finances got in the way (maybe 2018). So I am looking at small-boat competitions in the MD, VA, DE area or so.

Thoughts, y'all? Thanks in advance!

RE: Racing in the Chesapeake Bay Area

   Thanks, Laszlo!

For some reason, I did not see or hit that site... good to know for getting back into one-design; might be able to get back into the Lightnings!

Anyone have any advice on shoehorning a Dory into any racing in these (Northeast) parts? Handicapping, open-class or PHRF racing?

For trying to get a NE Dory into open racing, I am looking at a calculation from Tom Dove's site. Here, for my values, I get the following:

Displacement to  LWL: 145, Hull Speed: 4.92, Sail Area to Displ.: 12.63, LWL to Beam: 2.81, Motion Comfort: 10.45, Capsize Ratio: 2.07, Pounds/In: 232, class: cruiser/racer

A similar boat's derived values, given these, is the Bolger Cartopper!

Sailboat race (n) - spontaneous event occuring whenever two sailboats are sailing in the same direction, regardless of conscious participation of the other skipper.

The first known sailboat race occured immediately upon completion of construction launching of the second sailboat.

I'm feeling a bit guilty now, Captain.

The organizers of the Elf Classic (a distance race from Annapolis to St. Michaels) have been anxious to include boats such as your Dory -- but the race usually coincided with our OkoumeFest (and the OKF Challenge), so we never saw much interest. This year, it's different: OkoumeFest is on May 19-20, and the race is on May 13. Here's the information:  http://www.cyrg.org/elfclassic2017.htm

The race features a Le Mans-type start followed by a relatively long haul -- about 18 miles, I guess -- to cover in a 6-hour time limit. SIs for 2017 aren't published yet, but here are last year's: http://www.cyrg.org/pdfs/ElfClassic/2016/Elf-Classic-Sailing-Instructions.pdf. Probably not quite what you had in mind, but maybe worth a look.

If you're interested in traveling, you might even want to consider one of the events staged by WaterTribe. These are serious distance marathons, unsupported, and are set in Florida, North Carolina, and Minnesota. http://www.watertribe.com/Events/Default.aspx. These are an entirely different kettle of fish. CLC builders in Northeaster Dories have done quite well previously -- but expect to do some rowing as well as sailing.

The Elf Classic looks like a wonderful race, and thanks, Nancy! I would be honored to represent the NEDs, and would love for more to come on over and make a class of it.

I am game for it... I am just up the road in Baltimore, so I can make both OkoumeFest and the Elf. A rolling start like that is no problem.

I actually was going to do the EC WaterTribe event this March, but work and family business has unfortunately made me have to withdraw my registration, darn it. Hopefully in 2018....
