applying vinyl graphics

I have a 17' CLC Kayak that is ready for varnish/paint. I am going to paint the hull and I want to apply some vinyl graphics that will start from the painted botom, go over the side and end on the deck. Do I varnish first then apply the graphics and varnish over the vinyl? Or do I paint and varnish then apply the vinyl- if I do this how can I protect the vinyl from getting scratched etc.

RE: applying vinyl graphics

Rena,

CLC provides a video to show you how to apply vinyl  lettering and graphics (http://www.clcboats.com/shop/products/boat-building-supplies-epoxy-fiberglass-plywood/vinyl-boat-lettering/custom-vinyl-boat-lettering-graphics-red.html#videos).  I'm reasonably sure they're designed to be applied on top of any paint or varnish.  I used the vinyl letting over Brightsides on my boat and it still looks as it did on the day I applied it.

Best of luck,

Dick
