Chesapeke 16 finishing

Hi , building first boat and was thinking of painting hull and edges of deck and varnishing center section of deck. Was wondering if is ok to varnish over the paint that would be around the edge of deck. Thank you for any input.

RE: Chesapeke 16 finishing

Hi Andy,

in general you are going to paint or varnish....you don't combine the two (e.g, paint over varnish or varnish over paint).

that said, a little overlap is fine.

for the paint pattern you are referring to, its usually cleaner to varnish the deck first, mask off the deck where you want to paint, and then apply the paint after the varnish and that will include an overlap of paint over varnish on the deck and just paint on the hull.  paint can be applied over the varnish and that looks just fine.

the opposite (varnish over paint) really does not look good or clean as the tint in the varnish will distort the color of the paint.

so what that means is if you want to do the paint first, you then have to mask off the edge of the paint so that no varnish goes over it....and that is more complicated and difficult then the other way around.

i hope that makes sense.

happy to answer any follow-up questions

h
