Ideas for Supporting Wherry Cover

I have a CLC canvas cover for my Wherry but it sags badly and collects water in a few places.  I have it stretched as tight as possible with the tie down straps but it is still sagging and pooling water.  I am interested in hearing about or seeing any support frames or other methods that members have devised for the cover so that it sheds water instead of sagging and pooling water.  Thanks for your ideas.

For my skerry I've made a 'batten' out of 1/2" PVC pipe.  Much much cheaper than even cheap wood.

Dont remember who did it but one builder made some nice wooden bow sockets that slip into the oar locks so you dont have the metalic look of the metal bow sockets.  Even with just one bow over the boat you could tie a piece of rope to the bow, around the top of the bow, then back to the middle of the transom.

Hi Tex,

This works pretty well for me. Although I don't like to transport with cover on it works when I have to because of rain.

Cover on...

Bow support has a block stuck in mast partner

I used 3/16 southern yellow pine about 31/2 inches wide (width is pretty important). Any flexy stock will work. Pressure from the flex holds them in place. Set the length to give you about 4 - 5 inches of lift.

Blocks are glued in place to interlock with oar locks.

At bow and stern station block are cut at an angle matching boat sides. This keep them upright.

Used a Forstner bit to drill partway through block to make recess for oar lock.

My sloppy work should in no way keep you from making a bit more effort towards a clean installation. The supports could also use a bit of rounding over on the top edges to protect cover from chafe if you plan to tow with cover on.
