Scribe a scratch straight on to the deck?

Hey all,

I'm thinking about painting the hull of my Chesapeake 17 and rounding the hull color over on to the deck by an inch or so.  I was looking at the shop tip for how to do this (http://www.clcboats.com/shoptips/finishing-tips/painting_deck.html) and I'm not sure if I'm understanding it correctly, but does this actually require using a nail to scratch a line into the epoxy on the deck?  Is that right?

I suppose the scratch might not be that obvious as it's at the border between varnish and paint, but this still doesn't sound right to me.  Has anybody done this before?

Thanks

RE: Scribe a scratch straight on to the deck?

I used a marking gauge, which has a sharpened steel pin and an adjustable fence, to mark the deck of my Kaholo 14 for the same purpose. The scribed line is now impossible to see.
