Oxford shell + rowing unit

Hi,

I am about to install the Piantedosi rowing unit into my Oxford shell. I was wondering about the mouting method suggested in plans, i.e. a hold-down bracket screwed into a mouting plate to clamp down the leveling legs.

What is the purpose of the hold-down bracket? Why aren't the legs directly bolted into the mouting plate, e.g. using embedded nuts?

I also saw an alternative mouting method. Bolts inserted throug the mouting plate from below. The legs were then attached to these bolts using lock nuts.

My concern is that repeated removal of the mouting bracket (e.g. for transport) would result in worn out threads for the wood screws holding the bracket. Using "real" hardware would not have that problem.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be much appreciated!

RE: Oxford shell + rowing unit

By now I completed the boat using the method suggested in the plans.

Turns out that it is easy to remove the rowing unit by simply taking off the front angle brackets (2 screws). So, I (belatedly) see the wisdom of this design.
