varnish on wood

Hi,

After sanding the hull, I exposed the bare wood in a few small spots (1-2 in diameter). I am sure that this will not affect the structural integrity.

Should I apply epoxy to these spots and resand, or would it be ok to apply varnish to these spots and achieve the same quality of finish? Any other reasons why I should go through epoxy+sanding again?

Thanks!

RE: varnish on wood

epoxy would be best.  use a squeegee to do it smoothly and efficiently.

problem is small enough so that you don't need to patch with glass.

the epoxy protects the wood from water penetration.

you also may get a an uneven appearance if you apply varnish over wood in one area and over epoxy in another.  the wood will likely absorb varnish in a different manner than epoxy.

just my two cents.
