Staining and Color Problems

I stained my hull with a dark walnut colored design, and after I glassed it, the color of the wood almost hides my stain. It still looks neat, but I was just wondering if the color of the wood lightens up after the varnish is applied. Right now it is a deep red color.

I have stained four kayak so far and the varnish will darken it a little more due to a amber tone in the varnish. My last kayak has clear coat on it and that kept the color the same if not a little lighter.
