Scarf joint

Building a strip-planked boat and want to add a scarf joint.  Don't have a belt sander... any tips on how to easily create a scarf?

RE: Scarf joint

A very sharp plane.

Put one strip on top of the other to make a double thickness and plane the end of the stack to the correct angle. Take the top one off, flip it over and there's your scarf.

Pay attention to the grain directions when you stack them and you may want to have a third strip of scrap wood under the stack to keep the bottom piece from breaking.

If you need to do some sanding, a simple sanding block will work just fine, no power tool needed for this.

Have fun,

Laszlo
