Sassafras canoe plank layout on plywood

The patterns shown in The Canoe Shop for the Sassafras canoes show Station 6 5/8" or 1" from the edge of the plywood, but the instructions do not say whether this segment is part of the plank or supposed to be cut off.  Is the space between Station 6 and the end of the plywood to be cut, possibly in order to ensure a straight, identical edge of each plank?

RE: Sassafras canoe plank layout on plywood

Hi Derek

You must leave the 1" there.

It is to account for the 2" scarph you'll cut into that end of each half-plank.

Once you glue the two half-planks plank together by their scarphed surfaces, the station 6 lines on each half-plank will be lined up with each other...

I note that the 1" figure is is for 6mm plywood so, if you're using the thinner (4mm) plywood (ie you're making the 12 footer, or optional on the 14 footer), then you'd leave 5/8" instead of the 1", as the thinner plywood uses a shorter scarph...

I hope that makes sense!

Makes perfect sense, David.  Thank you for clearing that up.
