If you are a neophyte builder you will probably not be able to build to minimum weight even if you do everything by the book. So, it is unwise to intentionally add add weight unless you know up front that you are capable of holding the rest of the build to minimum weight. A heavy boat is not a better boat. If that were so everyone would be buying $800 rotomolded boats instead of their ultralight $2800 Kevlar/carbon brothers.
