ditto what Jim said. Honestly it's a better arrangement to put machine screws through the deck with a little glass reinforcement and washer than make 35' of wood oversized to accomodate the screws. I wonder if ring nails would work in the hardwood you describe. Don't think they would work well in the edge grain of a ply sheer clamp but there's been a lot of people who have bent decks on without ring nails. You'll end up using straps to assist the installation of the deck anyway, get a few more straps, dampen the deck and you could do away with the ring nails using just a two 4mm layer strip of ply for a sheerclamp like the Arctic Hawk.
