For what it's worth, I precoat to seal the wood against water intrusion rather than for structural reasons on CLC designs.

Applying a precoat with a squeegee keeps the weight low and guarantees that the vulnerable endgrain is sealed against water. Since this also seals the wood against further epoxy absorption, there is no net weight penalty.

It'd be interesting to see if people who get black ick along their seams sealed the endgrain before filleting.
